About The Long Lane
The Long Lane is a small site for adults learning a language on their own — no class, no study partner, and not much time.
Who writes it
I'm Ren. I live in Japan and study languages on my own, in the gaps of an ordinary week. "Ren" is a pen name; I keep my real name off the site, the same way I keep it off most of the internet.
The name comes from the proverb that it is a long lane that has no turning. Learning a language alone is mostly the long, straight part of that lane. The guides here are about getting through it: routines that survive a bad week, materials you can actually finish without a teacher, and knowing when paying for a tutor is worth it.
How the guides are made
- Sources first. Claims about how long things take, how exams work, or what a book contains come from published sources — the publisher, the exam body, or research — and the guide says where a number comes from.
- Written with help. I use AI writing tools to research and draft. Drafts are checked against their sources before they go up, and corrected when a reader or a source shows they are wrong.
- No pretend testing. Where a guide compares books or services, it compares what they publicly offer — answer keys, audio, level, price model. It does not claim I have worked through every one of them.
- Dated. Each guide shows when it was last updated.
